Flowers – and Butterflies – Come Alive at Bay Oaks

Bay Oaks’ orchard is home to several native trees and shrubs, varieties of roses, bees and butterflies. This Spring, our certified butterfly garden continues to attract new species of butterflies. This morning, near our mulberry tree (we can almost taste the pies to come!), we spotted this Swallowtail caterpillar:

This unsavory looking caterpillar has evolved to look like bird droppings to ward off hungry predators. One day soon, she will join the monarch, the cloudless sulphur and other native butterflies that live at Bay Oaks. Here is what she might look like:
