Bay Oaks, A Community of Volunteers

Thank you, Pea!
Bay Oaks has been lead by a volunteer board of professional women since we were founded 54 years ago.In the last decade, our community of volunteers has grown significantly and we are grateful for their many, many contributions.

One of the most popular activities here at Bay Oaks in BINGO. Once a week, volunteer Pea Lawson comes by to call the game. Residents gather around the dining room table and play for fun, for a variety of donated prizes and, of course, “to win!” reminds Mrs. Mims.

Pea has been volunteering with us for over a year and a half now. After moving to Miami from London with her husband (also a volunteer), Pea discovered Bay Oaks through our Volunteer Match program. As well as calling Bingo, she has joined us on trips to Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlour, at several community parties and other special events. We asked her to talk to us about what brings her back to Bay Oaks every week and this is what Pea had to say:

It’s a luxury to be able to volunteer, I’m fortunate to be able to spend my time giving back. As a foreigner, I learn so much from the residents about Miami and I especially like playing bingo because it makes them so happy. It makes me calm to be with the residents because they’ve experienced so much, weathered so many storms that I feel like I can get through anything.

We are grateful to Pea and her husband Marcus for their friendship and volunteer service. They Our wonderful volunteer, Pea Lawson, and her husbandare wonderful examples of the kind, generous and fun people who help make Bay Oaks the finest place for retirement in South Florida.

If you would like to join Bay Oaks as a volunteer, please call us at (305) 573-4337. We are always interested in new activities for the residents, both here and around town. We welcome individuals who can join us on trips to the movies, shows or shops. We also appreciate volunteer assistance in our Orchard and the Rose Garden. Others contribute by providing live music or other entertainment for the residents or simply providing company and an ear for stories of lives well-lived.
