Info Seekers Browse the 6th Annual Key Biscayne Village Health Fair

When our assisted living facility, Bay Oaks Home, had the opportunity to be a part of the 6th Annual Village Health Day in Key Biscayne, we were delighted.  The annual fair provides information on health services, programs, and other senior-related issues to seniors and the people who care for them.  Bay Oaks was in good company as part of a group of nearly 20 of South Florida’s leading providers of progressive life services who spent the morning sharing the most up-to-date information available with the scores of Key Biscayne residents who took advantage of this free event.

The diverse and dynamic group of providers that was on hand for this year’s Villiage Health Day was assembled by Key Biscayne Adult and Senior Program Coordinator Roxy Lohuis-Tejeda. The providers treated participants to everything from basic health checks, hearing, and memory screenings to the latest news from the frontiers of biomedical research at the University of Miami’s Miami Institute for Human Genomics, which is home to some of the world’s foremost researchers on Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

The Alliance for Aging had information on the SHINE program, which “empowers Florida’s seniors and their representatives to reach informed decisions regarding health insurance, long-term care planning and prescription assistance;”  and there was more information on Alzheimer’s care and prevention from Alzheimer’s Association Volunteer Leslie Rivera of the Dade Heritage Trust, one of the several long-time friends of Bay Oaks we ran into at this year’s fair.

Although the real star of this year’s fair was information, the homemade cookies from Bay Oaks Chef Mike Romanik were also very popular, as was the free massage therapy by Nurturing Moves.

6th Annual Key Biscayne Village Health DayAs the busy morning closed, providers and participants were invited to a luncheon and memory fitness demo by Dr. Raymond Ownby, yet another leader in elder care who has chosen to make South Florida his home.  When we spoke with Village Health Day organizer Lohuis -Tejeda  after the health fair, we realized that tables were barely cleared before it was time to start planning next year’s event.  The need for the right information to help seniors and their loved ones to make the right decisions becomes more and more pressing every day as the elder population booms.  Bay Oaks is proud to be a part of a community of top providers who will settle for nothing less than the best in care, information, and advocacy for South Florida’s seniors.

The Annual Key Biscayne Village Health Day is sponsored by the Village of Key Bisscayne Parks and Recreation Department Office of Senior Services.  For more information or for a complete list of providers from the 2009 Village Health Day, please contact us using the contact form below.
